How-to
How to Share an Amazon Wish List (Computer, iPhone and Android)
Step-by-step: share an Amazon wish list from a computer or the Amazon app, choose View only or View and edit, check what gift-givers see of your address, and avoid the gaps Amazon can't track.
To share an Amazon wish list, open Your Lists, pick the list, select + Invite or the share icon, choose View only, then copy the link or select Invite by email; anyone with a View only link can see the list but cannot change it.
Share an Amazon wish list from a computer
Amazon says the email addresses you enter are only used to send the invitation. You can see and remove invitees later: open the list and select Manage people in the More menu.
- Go to Account & Lists and select Your Lists.
- Select the list you want to share.
- Select + Invite, or the share button on the right that looks like an arrow.
- Choose View only for gift-givers, or View and edit for someone who should help manage the list.
- Copy the link, or select Invite by email.
Share from the Amazon app on iPhone or Android
The steps are the same on iPhone and Android. Amazon moves menus between app versions, so if you cannot find Your Lists under your profile, search the app for 'Your Lists'. Before you send the link, open it once in a browser where you are not signed in, to see exactly what your family will see.
- Open the Amazon Shopping app and tap the profile icon in the bottom bar.
- Open Your Lists and tap the list you want to share.
- Tap Invite, or the share icon.
- Choose View only or View and edit.
- Send the link through one of the suggested apps, or copy it and paste it into your family chat.
View only or View and edit?
| Option | Who it is for | What they can do |
|---|---|---|
| View only | Anyone buying you a gift | Anyone with the link can view the list and buy from it, but cannot change it |
| View and edit | A partner or parent helping manage the list | Add or remove items, change quantities and priorities, and post comments |
Only the list owner can change privacy settings, share or delete the list, and see or change the shipping address and recipient name.
Privacy settings: Private, Shared and Public
Each list has a privacy setting under Manage list, in the three-dot menu on the list. A Private list is for you. When you share a Private list, Amazon switches it to Shared, and anyone with the link can view it. Public is the widest setting.
People cannot browse their way to your list. Amazon's Find a List page says that to see a friend's list, you have to message them and ask them to share it. So the link you send is how your family finds the list.
Set the shipping address before you share
Gift-givers see only the name, city and state on your list's address; Amazon hides the street address. They can still ship the gift to any address they choose, for example their own house so they can wrap it first.
Sellers are different. To deliver an order, Amazon may share your address with sellers and delivery partners, and Amazon's help page says sellers receive the recipient's name, shipping address, phone number and an anonymous email address. Keep that in mind before you post a public list on social media.
- Go to Account & Lists and select Your Wish List.
- Choose the three-dot icon and select Manage list.
- Go to the shipping address section and select Create New.
- Enter the address, select Save Changes, then select Ship to this address to make it the default.
Keep the surprise: 'Don't spoil my surprises'
This setting is on by default. Gifts bought for you stay secret for several weeks and keep appearing as Unpurchased on your list, and if you try to buy something you were already given, Amazon warns you.
There is one catch in Amazon's own wording: the purchased filter and warnings only appear while you are signed in. If you open your own list without signing in, the list may reveal a surprise. To change the setting, open the list, select Manage List in the three-dot menu, check or uncheck 'Don't spoil my surprises', and save.
Common problems with shared Amazon lists
- Gifts bought somewhere else are not marked. Amazon moves an item to purchased when someone orders it from your list. For items from other sellers, Amazon offers a 'Buying this elsewhere' link, but a relative who buys the same thing in a shop without telling Amazon leaves it looking available, and the next relative may buy it again.
- Items from other stores do not fit. Amazon's help describes adding items with Add to List on Amazon product pages. Amazon Assistant, the browser add-on that saved items from other websites, was discontinued on March 28, 2023.
- Your address goes further than the list. Gift-givers see your city and state, but sellers who ship a gift get your full address and phone number.
- Signed-out views spoil surprises. The purchased filter only works while you are signed in.
- View and edit means edit. Anyone with that link can add or remove items. Send View only to gift-givers.
If your family shops at more than Amazon
If your list mixes Amazon items with a local bookshop, a brand's own site and Etsy, one Amazon list cannot hold it all. Jinnie, our app, can. Paste a product link from any store, including Amazon, and Jinnie fills in the title, image and price for most shops. On a computer, the Jinnie Chrome extension saves products as you browse.
Duplicate gifts are handled by reservations instead of checkout. A relative reserves the item from the link, in any browser, with a name, an email and one confirmation tap. Everyone else sees it as Reserved, wherever the gift is then bought. Jinnie is free on the web, iPhone and Android.
Like Amazon's "Don't spoil my surprises" setting, Jinnie hides reservations from you, the list owner, by default, with the same catch: it works while you are signed in. One limit: Jinnie cannot import an Amazon list in one step, so you add items by link. Many families keep both: the Amazon list for Amazon items, and one Jinnie link for everything.
Frequently asked questions
How do I share my Amazon wish list?
Go to Your Lists, select the list, select + Invite or the share icon, choose View only, then copy the link or select Invite by email. In the Amazon app, Your Lists is under the profile icon, and the Invite button works the same way.
Can someone see my Amazon wish list without an account?
Amazon says anyone with a View only link can view your list. Buying from it happens in their own Amazon account, at checkout.
Can people see my address on my Amazon wish list?
Gift-givers see only your name, city and state; Amazon hides the street address. Sellers who fulfil an order do receive your name, shipping address, phone number and an anonymous email address.
Why can't I see what has been bought from my list?
'Don't spoil my surprises' is on by default. Purchased gifts keep showing as Unpurchased for several weeks. You can turn it off under Manage List, but that spoils the surprise.
Can I add items from other websites to an Amazon wish list?
Amazon's help describes adding items from Amazon product pages with Add to List. The Amazon Assistant add-on that saved items from other sites was discontinued on March 28, 2023. For a list that mixes stores, use a wishlist app that accepts any link.
What is the difference between View only and View and edit?
View only lets anyone with the link see the list and buy from it. View and edit also lets people add or remove items, change quantities and priorities, and post comments. Only the owner can change privacy, share or delete the list, or change the address.
How do I stop someone from editing my Amazon list?
Open the list, choose Manage people from the More menu, and remove the person. Then send View only links from now on.
