How to write a Christmas list people can use

The best lists are specific. “A sweater” leaves the giver guessing; “Uniqlo crew neck, size M, dark green” does not.

  • Write 8 to 12 wishes at different prices, so every budget has an option.
  • Add size, color, model or a link for anything that comes in versions.
  • Put a star next to the one or two wishes you care about most.
  • Note what you already have enough of, like mugs or candles.

Organizing a gift exchange instead? The Secret Santa questionnaire collects sizes, favorites and allergies from each person.

Tips for parents: the letter to Santa

  • Let younger children draw their wishes and write the words for them underneath. The drawing box on the kids list is there for that.
  • Use the prompts to talk about the year. “Something I am proud of” often matters more to kids than the wish list.
  • The “Please bring something for” line nudges kids to think about someone else, like a sibling or a friend.
  • Take a photo of the letter before it goes “to the North Pole”. It makes a lovely keepsake.
  • Set expectations by saying Santa picks from the list, so not every wish arrives.

How to share a list so nobody buys the same gift

A paper list on the fridge works for one household. Once grandparents, aunts and friends are buying too, the same wish often gets bought twice. The fix is one shared list where givers mark what they are buying.

Fill in a template above and tap Create my list. After a free sign-in you get a Jinnie list link to send to family. Anyone with the link can claim a wish, so others see it is taken.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Christmas list templates free?

Yes. All five templates are free to download as PDF in US Letter or A4, and free to fill in online. Printing needs no account, and there is no watermark beyond a small web address in the footer. To share your list as a link, sign in for free.

Which Christmas list template is best for kids?

Under seven, use the kids list: big lines, star bullets and a box to draw the favorite wish. Children who like to write usually prefer the letter to Santa, which has prompts like "This year I have been" and "Something I am proud of".

What should I put on my Christmas list?

Mix sizes of wishes: a few small things under $20, a few mid-range ones, and one bigger wish people can chip in on. Be specific about size, color and model, and add a link where you can. Note what you already have so people do not buy it again.

How do I stop people buying the same gift?

Share one list with everyone and let givers mark what they are buying. A paper list cannot do that. Fill in a template here, tap Create my list and sign in for free: you get a Jinnie list link where family can claim a wish, so others see it is taken.

Can I print a Christmas list I filled in online?

Yes. Fill in any template, then use Print filled. The page prints on one sheet with no site menus, and you do not need an account.

When should I send my Christmas list?

Early to mid November gives people time to shop sales and order online. If family is sending gifts by mail, aim for the first week of November.
